Major milestone for M1 upgrade as new bridges emerge

Major construction on Stage 2 of the Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill upgrade has been motoring along with significant progress on new Springwood Road bridges.

Bielby Holdings, Managing Director Adam Edwards said the upgrade, between Watland Street and Sports Drive is an important project for the Bielby Hull Joint Venture.

“The project includes M1 widening works, constructing a safer on-ramp at Lexington Road and extensions to the South East Busway and V1 Veloway.

“I am delighted to see how much progress the project team has made over the past six months.

“Drainage and sewer relocation work on Springwood Road is complete and construction has started on the three new bridges over Springwood Road.

“Foundation works for the new bridges have been completed with 24 bored piles on Springwood Road.

“Having these solid foundations in place is a major milestone for the project. The three new bridges will form part of the new M1 on-ramp at Lexington Road and V1 Veloway crossing Springwood Road.

“The new Lexington Road on-ramp will replace the Sports Drive on-ramp to provide extra capacity for merging traffic and safer access onto the M1,” Mr Edwards said.

Bielby Hull Joint Venture, Project Manager Clayton Smith said drainage works in preparation for widening the northbound motorway to four lanes between Logan Road and Lexington Road was progressing well.

“In recent months, 670 lineal metres of pipework has been laid and more than 3,000 cubic metres of concrete poured.

“The V1 Veloway underpass at Logan Road is complete and the next stage will be to realign the northbound Logan Road off-ramp.

“We thank motorists for their patience and urge them to continue sticking to reduced speed limits through the site for their safety and the safety of our roadworkers” Mr Smith said

This project is part of the $750 million Pacific Motorway (M1): Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill Upgrade, supporting 721 jobs over the life of the project.

Ipswich Motorway Upgrade: Rocklea to Darra – Stage 1 – Project Wrap-Up

From April 2017 to April 2021, the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade: Rocklea to Darra Stage 1 played a central role in the lives of motorists, residents and businesses as works to upgrade the highway and create a more efficient and safer road network were undertaken.

For several members of the Bielby Team, the project has been a significant part of their working lives as they worked collaboratively with our team, stakeholders and partners to deliver a world-class infrastructure solution for one of the State’s busiest arterials.

Following project completion, we caught up with three key team members and asked them to share their experiences delivering a $400 million project comprising 3km of highway upgrades and seven new bridges across a flood-plain.

Andrew Howgate – Project Director

What did you enjoy most about the project?

The project has been twenty per cent of my career.

Looking back at the challenge of the complexity of raising and lowering the busy motorway while contending with safety, environmental, community and design issues, not to mention the day to day challenge of managing people, gives a great sense of accomplishment.

The job also had several firsts for me, an archaeological find in timber bridges, a collaborative contract as project manager, incorporation of numerous new computer-based company systems and tools and every conceivable Public Utility Plant challenge.

What was the project’s biggest challenge?

Managing an ever-changing throng of people; people coming, people going, people getting promoted, people having good times and bad, all of which are a natural part of a multi-year major project.

What about the completion of the project makes you most proud?

The project has no outstanding disputes or issues. The knowledge I was part of a team including the client, designers, contractors, subcontractors, and the community who have left an infrastructure legacy and strong relationships are something we should all be proud of.

How does it feel to have delivered a major piece of infrastructure for Queensland?

I always look forward to telling my kids I was part of building this.  They’re indifferent now, but one day I’m sure they’ll tell the “grandkids”.

What is the next project you will be helping Bielby to deliver?

I’m helping deliver numerous recent project wins as Project Director.  Watland Street to Sports Drive, Cooroy to Curra D1, and Northern Transitway are all in my remit.

What did you enjoy most about the project?

I loved working with the team. We created an exceptional culture and a tight-knit, collaborative environment that enabled us to meet our targets, operate efficiently and deliver the project to the satisfaction of everyone involved. It was also fantastic to be able to work on-site.

What was the project’s biggest challenge?

Working within a live motorway whilst proactively engaging with stakeholders, particularly during changes to construction methodology from unpredictable circumstances such as weather and construction conditions.

What about the completion of the project makes you most proud?

It was a privilege to work with some engaging local stakeholders and to help address their needs and concerns as we delivered the project. I also appreciated the project’s size and scale, including the seven bridges, and was fortunate to have seen the pitching and piling process within a live motorway.

How does it feel to have delivered a major piece of infrastructure for Queensland?

I feel proud to be a part of such a successful upgrade, which has significant improvements for the area. I hope to be back there one day if the next stage comes to fruition!

What is the next project you will be helping Bielby to deliver?

I’ll be working to support the delivery of the Northern Transitway in Brisbane. The project will provide a high-quality public transport corridor and will see 2.3km of dedicated northbound and southbound bus lanes constructed between Kedron and Chermside along Gympie Road.

What did you enjoy most about the project?

The working culture for R2D was superior; everyone came to work with a great attitude.  The ability of the R2D team to work towards a common goal whilst still being able to have a laugh made for a well-organised and effective environment.

What was the project’s biggest challenge?

The motorway traffic switches were perhaps our biggest challenge. Due to the narrow road corridor, the project had over seven major stages.  The preparation works would start months in advance, with the team focused on achieving the switch dates.  Once that date arrived, the entire R2D team worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure the motorway was open for traffic.

What about the completion of the project makes you most proud?

I was one of the first guys on the ground in 2017, so to see the project evolving was extremely rewarding and satisfying. It was also great to see that everyone who worked on R2D were equally proud of our combined efforts.

How does it feel to have delivered a major piece of infrastructure for Queensland?

It gives me immense satisfaction to drive through this section of the motorway and know I had a hand in its creation.  It’s something we worked really hard to deliver and should be proud of!

What is the next project you will be helping Bielby to deliver?

Topping the fantastic work culture in this project is going to be hard to beat, but I’m hoping to transfer some of our great learnings from this project to the next. We are still wrapping up the final tasks for R2D, and post that, I will have a better idea of what comes next.

The $400 million project was jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, each committing $200 million. The project covers a 3km section of the Ipswich Motorway between Granard Road, Rocklea to the east of Oxley Road, Oxley and included seven new bridges.

In April 2017, TMR appointed Bielby Hull Albem Joint Venture (BHA JV), a Queensland-owned joint venture, as the contractor for the upgrade.

Everton Park Link Road Completed

Bielby Holdings is delighted to announce the completion of Everton Park Link Road, a vital congestion easing project, connecting South Pine Road, north of the Kedron Brook Creek, to Stafford Road, east of Mountridge Street in Brisbane’s inner North-West.

The completed project will reduce traffic congestion at the Stafford Road and South Pine Road intersection and improve connectivity for cyclists with dedicated facilities linking into the ever-popular Kedron Brook Bikeway.

We caught up with Joe Damen, Project Manager, who oversaw the project, ensuring its smooth progress from site mobilisation to completion.

What did you enjoy most about the project?

I liked the size of the project, as it allowed me to get to know all our staff and workers and create a cohesive team dedicated to delivering a successful project.

The project had plenty of opportunities for professional development and growth for all our staff and workers. It included plenty of technical aspects of road construction throughout the project.

What was the projects biggest technical challenge?

The project included a major reinforced concrete box culvert structure for stormwater drainage.

The structure is 60m long on a 40 degree skew at the base of a creek bed with difficult ground conditions. Comprised of 208 precast elements weighing between 6 tonnes and 12 tonnes, it was a logistical challenge to transport the materials to the site, ensuring that we worked within the boundaries of traffic curfews.

Working in a tight urban environment also posed some challenges. Each precast element had to be delivered and unloaded into a narrow corridor between the work area and Stafford Rd without causing traffic congestion on the local road network. We then had to store precast elements on their side and a dual crane lift undertaken to install them below the new road.

What about the completion of the project makes you most proud?

This is my first project as a Project Manager, and I am very proud to have led a safe and successful project on time. I’d like to thank every team member for their commitment to ensuring that we delivered another outstanding piece of infrastructure for our clients.

I look forward to seeing the project benefit the local community and businesses while reducing congestion for road users and improving access for pedestrians and cyclists.

What is the next project you will be helping Bielby to deliver?

I’ll be working with the estimating team on upcoming projects in the road and rail sectors.

Bielby To Deliver Vital Public Transport Infrastructure for the Department of Transport and Main Roads

Bielby Holdings is delighted to announce our appointment by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to construct the Northern Transitway, which will provide a high-quality public transport corridor in Brisbane’s north.

The project is part of the state’s Passenger Transport Infrastructure Investment Program (PTIIP) and will see 2.3km of dedicated in and out-bound bus lanes constructed between Kedron and Chermside along Gympie Road.

Enabling high-frequency services, the new infrastructure will save up to six minutes of travel time on some services during peak periods, improve safety and increase capacity, benefitting over 5,000 people during peak periods each weekday. The project will also improve accessibility at bus stops,  with enhancements to kerb ramps along pathways improving access and safety for pedestrians and bike riders.

Road safety will play a critical part in the project by removing unsignaled right turns along the corridor. New traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Gympie Road and Boothby Street, including a dedicated right-turn lane and U-turn facility.

Construction commences mid-2021 and will continue for approximately two years.

Pacific Motorway M1 Watland Street to Sports Drive

Bielby Secures Watland Street to Sports Drive M1 Upgrade

Bielby Holdings, in a joint venture with JF Hull Holdings, is delighted to have secured the Pacific Motorway M1 Watland Street to Sports Drive Upgrade. Already on-site delivering the Sports drive to Gateway Motorway upgrade, this is our second package of works on the Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill Upgrade Project.

The project will see significant enhancements made to the M1, designed to improve traffic flow, safety and connections for bus and cycle commuters. Work will include widening the M1 up to four northbound lanes between the Watland Street overpass and the existing Sports Drive on-ramp,  a new M1 on-ramp at Lexington Road and widening Rochedale Road to three southbound lanes from the Rochedale Road off-ramp (Exit 19) to Springwood Road.

In addition, the South-East Busway will be extended to Springwood bus station and the V1 Veloway will be extended from Sports Drive to Watland Street.

Berrybank Stage 2 Wind Farm Project

Bielby Holdings is delighted to have secured the design and construction of the Civil Balance of Plant (CBoP) works for the Berrybank Stage 2 Wind Farm Project for Vestas – Australian Wind Technology (Vestas).

Located within the Corangamite and Golden Plains Shire Councils approximately 76km west of Geelong and 48km south of Ballarat, Victoria, the project will deliver 107 MW of power into the grid, enough to power 82 000 homes.

Managing Director, Adam Edwards, outlined Bielby’s involvement. “We are delighted to be undertaking our first project with Vestas, and are looking forward to bringing our proven design and construction capabilities to a major renewables project in Victoria.”

“Design has already commenced and as our team are deployed and commence works, we are confident that our extensive experience in the renewable energy sector will provide positive results for Vestas and significant benefits to the project.”

“Our role will be to provide the critical civil infrastructure required to enable the project’s 26 x V136 4.2MW HH112m wind turbines to be installed and for the site to be accessed via more than 20km of internal roads and improved public roads. We look forward to this exciting step in Bielby’s history and to making a positive contribution to the Corangamite and Golden Plains Shires,” said Adam.

Across the project, Bielby will be responsible for the delivery of;

  • 26 turbine foundations
  • 26 crane hardstands
  • 20km of internal access road

HRFU Project Update

It has been a busy couple of months in north Queensland as works progress on the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade.

The project covers essential upgrades to the Bruce Highway, designed to improve safety and efficiency for road users, as well as significantly improving flood immunity.

Bielby Managing Director, Adam Edwards recently visited the site, “It was great to see such impressive progress being made on the project, with significant works being undertaken in recent months. All credit must go to everyone involved in the joint venture team.”

But, as with any project, milestones achieved don’t mean resting on laurels! Throughout November, the project will continue at a rapid pace which will see the completion of key bridges, critical traffic switches and culvert installation at the project’s northern end.

As the project moves through its next phase, we look forward to bringing you updates on the following works:

  • Construction of main deck spans at the Upper Haughton/Hodal Road overpass and Pink Lily Lagoon bridge
  • installation of flood-prone culverts at the northern end of the project
  • erection of final super T girders at the Haughton River bridge and completion of bridge substructure construction
  • completion of the Horseshoe Lagoon bridge
  • switch Bruce Highway traffic onto the new, final alignment south of Trembath Road
  • complete pavement rehabilitation on overtaking lanes (between Shirbourne Road and Woodstock Giru Road).

The $513 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($414.4 million) and Queensland Government ($102.9 million). The project covers essential upgrades to the Bruce Highway, designed to improve safety and efficiency for road users, as well as significantly improving flood immunity. Bielby Holdings Awarded Contract for Everton Park Link Road

Bielby Holdings is delighted to have been appointed to undertake construction works on the Everton Park Link Road for The Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The project will see significant investment made to ease congestion in North-West Brisbane with the new link road connecting South Pine Road, north of the Kedron Brook Creek, to Stafford Road, east of Mountridge Street.

To ease disruption, the majority of the Everton Park Link Road will be constructed away from operating roads, and traffic impacts will be minimised during construction. Upon completion the project will provide a direct route between Stafford Road and South Pine Road, reducing traffic congestion at the Stafford Road and South Pine Road intersection.

As part of the project the right turn facility from South Pine Road into Stafford Road during peak hours, providing more traffic light ‘green time,’ and improving travel time at the intersection.
Cyclists and active transport users are also catered for with increased connectivity and dedicated facilities linking into the ever-popular Kedron Brook Bikeway.

Wider footpaths and additional pedestrian crossings will provide significant benefits for local retailers, cafes and entertainment venues as pedestrians will be able to access the site quickly and safely.

Bielby Secures Bruce Highway – Cooroy to Curra – Section D

Bielby Holdings, in joint venture with BMD Group is delighted to have secured the first of two major contracts (Contract 1) to deliver the fourth and final section of the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Cooroy to Curra program – Section D: Woondum to Curra (C2CD).

Contract 1 between Woondum to Sandy Creek Road involves construction of a new four lane divided highway connecting to the existing Bruce Highway south of Gympie at Woondum, and new interchanges at Penny Road, Gympie Connection Road.

Bielby Secures Major Project

Bielby Holdings is delighted to announce that we have been appointed by the Department of Transport and Main Road to construct the Sports Drive to Gateway Motorway upgrade.

The upgrade will see Improvements to 3.46 kilometres of the Pacific Motorway northbound carriageway between Sports Drive entry ramp and the Gateway Motorway overpass (SD2GM) and involves widening of northbound travel lanes to five lanes, upgrade to the Gateway Motorway exit ramp, relocation of Big Al’s Brook Fish Passage and extending the off road concrete cycle Veloway (V1) on the western side of the M1.

Work is scheduled to commence late March 2020 with the project running through to April 2021.
