As Principal Contractor, one of the key challenges Bielby successfully managed on the project was the construction of the four lane highway under existing traffic movements. This was necessary, as the existing two lane Mt Lindesay Highway meandered over the footprint of the new highway alignment.
To achieve this, Bielby undertook complex staging for the construction of the temporary reinforced earth embankments to allow the safe construction of the bridge over Mt Lindesay Highway, while maintaining safe traffic movements on the existing Crest Road.
Another key project challenge was that the project works interfaced with four large schools, a mobile home park, a large shopping centre / precinct, hotel, bus centre and industrial operations, as well as neighbouring residents and commuters. As such, it was imperative that a detailed focus on minimising impacts was necessary on this project.
By reworking the staging of the project works and decreasing the proposed eight stages to five stages, the Bielby team shortened the construction period by six months – resulting in cost savings for the client (TMR) and significantly reduced impacts for the local community and businesses within the area.
