Bielby Holdings (in joint venture) successfully delivered 44 bridge structures and associated bulk earthworks between Trustrums Hill and Richmond River, including construction of the new Mororo River Bridge, as part of the larger Woolgoolga to Ballina project, which upgraded the Pacific Highway to motorway (Class M) or arterial (Class A) standard, over its 155km length.

Overview

As part of the upgrade of the Pacific Highway to motorway (Class M) or arterial (Class A) standard over its 155km length, which included nine interchanges, more than 170 bridges and more than 350 connectivity structures, Bielby, in joint venture, successfully delivered 44 bridge structures and associated bulk earthworks between Trustrums Hill and Richmond River, including construction of the new Mororo Bridge.
Key challenges included comprehensive staging of the works to minimise risks associated with flooding and inundation in floodplain locations, effectively managing soft soils and difficult geotechnical conditions, constructing works over/adjacent to sensitive waterways and protected flora/fauna, and ensuring positive interface management with the local community, existing road users, local farmers, and up to 10 other contractors.

The scope of works included:

  • Construction of 44 bridge structures
  • Soft soil works including CIC and CFA piles and associated load transfer platforms

  • Local embankment and pavements
  • Stormwater installation
